Anyway, as I mentioned, our trip was super busy. We left on Sunday, August 1st, and came home a little over a week later on Monday, August 9th. We spent the first half of our trip in Colorado Springs, so that I could see my Great Aunt Cletis (we stayed with her- which was wonderful!) and also visit with some family friends (the same ones were in the Springs to see last year for a wedding!). Sunday was pretty much just a travel day- Daniel did great on the plane and the whole day really. Cute story: when the plane was landing and we were getting closer to the ground, Daniel spotted a lake and immediately pointed to it and said "pond"!! He was SO excited. I thought it was great that he could tell what it was from the air!
Daniel of course LOVED having Grandma Mary Kay, Grandpa Larry, and Aunt Wendy at his beck and call the whole trip. He was quite spoiled! (And thankfully, I can say he has handled the subsequent "abandonment" upon coming home very well!) The car seat "wheelie" was just the best thing in the world to have! We took advantage of every luggage cart & check-in convenience we could because between the 6 of us we had about 17 pieces of luggage/baby gear to keep track of! We were those families you laugh at at the airport because they have so much luggage! But, hey, we had a super busy week and many wedding events to pack for! Grandma Cheryl gave Daniel his very own backpack- an Elmo backpack! Daniel loved it and it was great to keep his toys in the whole trip- we loved having it and took it everywhere we went.
Sunday night was for relaxing once we arrived in the Springs. Monday we got up and went right to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo when it opened and had a ton of fun there. It's a really nice zoo and actually quite big too. We were there for about three hours! I loved how it all looks like it blends in. You hardly ever feel like you're in a zoo- the environment is very lush and natural. What a nice place to explore. Daniel loved walking all around the zoo by himself. He was rarely in the stroller- but that's his independence speaking these days! Daniel loved pushing the stroller around though; well- he mostly had fun tipping it. Grandma and Aunt Wendy took Daniel on the carousel- which he loved. He was so excited when he saw it and couldn't figure out how to get in the gate that surrounded it- it was so cute because you could tell he really wanted to ride it and yet he's not old enough to beg, thank goodness. Daniel also enjoyed the play area for kids for a while. We all enjoyed seeing so many giraffes and so many different animals at this zoo.
After spending a few hours at the zoo, we headed up the mountain to see the Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, which was included as part of the zoo. Daniel had just as much fun running around and exploring that, too. He even climbed up the whole tower all by himself...All 90 steps! So that was a fun little adventure and thankfully, Daniel took a great nap when we got back to my aunt's house.
That night, Ben, Daniel, and I met up with our friends, Susan and Tom and their daughter Julie, her husband David, and their new little baby boy, Logan (2 months old!), for dinner. We had a really nice visit and chatted for quite a while. It was cute to see Daniel's reaction to such a little, sleepy baby. He did try to give him a high five at our encouragement- that was fun.
