Daniel's New "House"

Our new shed may not really be a house, but he sure fits inside! Too cute!

So this is our new mini-shed for all of Daniel's toys (and yes, he totally has more toys than shown here- they've just yet to make it outdoors again!). Daniel has completely caught on to the fact that his toys are in there and that he needs to put his toys back in there when it's time to clean up; he can even help open the doors and close the doors (which was the whole idea behind getting this particular outdoor "toy box"- I wanted something he could get into easily). He's having so much fun exploring it- I think he took out and put away his toys a hundred times today! The last picture was just so cute, I had to share it- Daniel is scooting down off the step. And don't you just LOVE his hat?!! He looks like such a little boy.

Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall...Who is the Cutest of Them All?

Well, Daniel is, of course!

Out and About

Daniel had a very busy day yesterday and he was such a good boy the whole day. We went to a local landscaping center to meet with a landscaper and Daniel got to play in the sandbox there with Grandma Mary Kay and Grandpa Larry while Mommy and Daddy were busy. He had so much fun and I don't think he missed us one bit. We were able to watch him from afar as we walked around- it was so cute to watch him playing around in the sand. He sure likes sand. Next on our list better be a sandbox for him, I think! We stopped at Portillo's for lunch, and then we headed to Menards to get a storage box for all of Daniel's outdoor toys. Grandma entertained Daniel while we looked around...she even treated Daniel to one of those "car" shopping carts and he really enjoyed that. Daniel sure took a great nap when we got home and still got even more playing time with Grandma and Grandpa after that. They stayed for dinner, too! What a fun day we had- we got a lot done and we really enjoyed getting some fresh air while we were out and about, too.

Random Thoughts

No real news here...just some random thoughts...

Daniel is too cute with these red-decoder glasses. He looks in them, takes them off and looks around without them, puts them on again and looks again...like he's comparing. And he gets the cutest silly squinty face, too- I kept trying to get that picture but no luck. Thanks to my friend Wendy for the glasses!

Daniel likes to take his shoes off in the car now- every time we reach our destination, his shoes are off. Silly boy.

Thanks to the gods who created KneeBouncers, we clipped Daniel's nails tonight completely fuss-free!!!! (Have I ever told you how much Daniel HATES to have his nails clipped? It's SO frustrating! I would not wish the struggle we have with clipping Daniel's nails on anybody. Tonight was bliss!! But, hey, I don't want to jinx it...just wanted to share a moment of bliss!)

We re-organized our front hall closet a couple weeks ago. Daniel now has his own hook stuck low on the wall where he can reach it to put his coat away and he has a shelf for his shoes. It is so cute to watch him go to the closet when we ask him to get or put away his coat and shoes. I think he is so proud of himself that he knows where his things go and that he can help. And he can even close the bi-fold door- pinch free so far (again, no jinx wanted!).

New words: dum (for dump, as in dump truck), ha (for hi and hat), bebe (for baby), and key.

Daniel actually WANTED his diaper changed today. While playing this afternoon, he pointed to his wet diaper (this isn't new- he's been doing this for about a couple weeks, as if indicating he's just gone to the bathroom- a great first step toward potty training), I asked if he needed a new diaper, he went to the stairs, climbed up them, walked to his room, grabbed his lion (at this point I thought he'd get distracted from the diaper change), pointed up at his changing table and proceeded to lay perfectly still while I changed his wet diaper. Weird. The kid never wants his diaper changed- that's another typical toddler struggle lately. Hey, I'll take it. (update: he just wanted his diaper changed again this morning...while I think it's neat, I think I'll keep an eye on this to make sure something else isn't up, if something is bothering him...hmmm...he's a puzzle sometimes!)

Daniel went almost 22 hours without seeing his Daddy...he missed his Daddy (and Daddy sure missed him!). I think that's probably the longest Daniel's gone without seeing Daddy, granted most of that was nighttime, but still. Ben had a business dinner last night and then was asked to go into the office today for a meeting (this is rare- mostly he works from home). So Daniel didn't see Daddy until after he woke up from his nap this afternoon. When he saw his Daddy, he had the BIGGEST grin on his face I'd ever seen. But I mention Daddy's absence because Daniel seemed to just know Ben was gone- he kept saying "dada" and waving bye (almost like another 2-word sentence, he's really been working on connecting words and signs) as if to say Daddy is bye-bye. So, although we really missed Daddy, we had a wonderful morning, just the two of us- I don't get that very often, since Ben does work from home and Daniel quite loves his Daddy, meaning Daniel always wants to be with his Daddy (but don't get me wrong- I LOVE having Ben work from home- that really has its perks). I guess it's just that...I love that I get to spend my day playing with my little guy!

Daniel knocks on Ben's office door so cute when he wants to go in. How can you resist such a cute knock? You don't, or at least, not easily.

Today Daniel drove his car forward. So now he can go backward and forward!

Daniel sits in our lap so cute for stories. He actually snuggles more now- he shifts until he's right where he wants to be. Oh, how I melt.

We've been practicing the stretches that we learned in gymnastics. Daniel actually requests them! I should explain- We sing songs while we do them and then we drum on the floor at the end just like in class and that's the part he loves, and thus, why he requests them. He's so cute doing the stretches- I love it because he's so little and so much more flexible than I am!

Recycling is so much fun. What did moms do to entertain their toddlers before recycling bins? We literally save bottles, boxes, magazines, etc. for Daniel to take out to the recycling bin- he is always so excited to be able to recycle.

Daniel can almost walk down the stairs holding only one hand. He likes to try and he's got pretty good balance. We're practicing, and of course I'm still right there. It's good practice for when he can use the railing...someday! He usually does the first set down with one hand and will then request both hands for the rest of the way. He's such a good boy and getting stronger!

And I promise this is the last random thought (this turned out longer than I planned!)- Daniel gives the best hugs! I got so many of them today!

Daniel Cracks an Egg: A Study in Toddler Behavior

I felt like I was watching an episode of the Discovery Channel's latest nature series, "Life," all over again today...the part where monkeys were observed banging these large hard nuts on the ground to crack them open.

Anyway, I was cleaning up the kitchen after lunch today and looked up to find Daniel hard at work stomping on his Easter eggs to open them up. Talk about clever! I guess he managed to find one that had food in it (I thought I'd set those aside- guess I missed one!). He must have decided that this was the best way to open the egg and get at the Fruit Loops. But he really only ate a couple of them; he just kept cleaning up, trying to close the egg (I helped with this), and then he'd start all over again. Daniel was so focused on this activity for quite some time. I was laughing so hard...I tried taking a few pictures, but finally decided a video was the best way to capture Daniel's cleverness. FYI- I did watch closely to make sure the plastic didn't actually crack...but the eggs held up surprisingly well to Daniel's repeated stomps! What a clever little monkey I have!

KneeBouncers

We don't watch much TV or play much on the computer with Daniel. We just don't need to, want to, nor does he sit still for long. But, I came across this super fun website called KneeBouncers and Daniel LOVES it! The site is filled with free games for babies and toddlers, and all the little ones have to do is push any button on the keyboard and lots of fun things happen in the different games. It really is so cool and so cute- what a great concept. Aunt Christina and Daniel had a lot of fun playing around with the site this afternoon. I showed it to Daniel once before and he was excited then, but I think he loved his time playing with Aunt Christina even more. You can see how excited and focused he is in the pictures above!

Easter at Grandma's

This is my favorite Easter picture of Daniel! Could he BE any cuter?!
Thanks to Jason (Christina's boyfriend) for the great photos!

After Daniel's nap this morning (his first morning nap in over a week- we seem to be switching to just afternoon naps- a big adjustment!), we headed to Grandma Cheryl's for more egg hunting, lunch, and lots of playtime with my family. Daniel immediately jumped into the egg hunt at Grandma's, giving the eggs he found to Aunt Christina, and then looking around for more. It was so cute to watch him look all around for them- he's got a good eye! And of course he figured out that there were snacks in those eggs, too- Fruit Loops, which he's never had before and boy did he like them. So much sugar he's had today! We'll be doling out these treats a little more slowly over the next few days...

Daniel finds an egg by the fireplace.

Wow- two more eggs!

More snacks, please!
"Pease" is Daniel's newest word- it's so cute the way he says it, too! He can even link the "more" sign together with the word "pease"- that's practically a TWO WORD phrase- wow!

Daniel hands his egg finds to Aunt Christina.

Daniel checks out his egg stash here, too.

Look what I found!

Hi-YAH! Daniel shows off another new trick- his kicks!

Tickles from Uncle Brian!

A quiet moment with Daddy...

And after all that excitement, Daniel took yet another nap when we got home and even still went to bed early. What a busy and fun day!

Easter Morning

Happy Easter! What fun we had around here! Daniel sure caught on fast to the whole Easter Egg Hunt the Easter Bunny set up for him. And he especially enjoyed the snacks inside the eggs- Cinnamon Toast Crunch squares and Animal Crackers, two of his favorite snacks. Every time he found an egg (or ball, as he called them), he wanted us to open it so he could eat the treat and then he'd throw his hands up in his "where?" gesture and set off looking for more. Too cute!

Yummy treats!

I like these eggs, Mommy!

Where are some more?

Oooh...what's this basket here? Some books and this green stuff!

Found another one!

Wait a minute, that's not a ball!

Daniel tries to put an egg back together.

Daniel checks out his stash (and this isn't even all of them!).

Well, they do kind of look like balls!

Fun with the green stuff...all over our kitchen!

Daniel checks out some new stickers!

Good Night, Sleep Tight!

Daniel thought he'd just call to say, "Good Night!" in his oh-so-adorable pj's!
(I had to share this picture! And can I just say how nice it is to have pj's that fit SO well- now why can't his clothes fit that well?!)

Big Feet = New Shoes!

Well, maybe not BIG feet, but certainly bigger! We decided to hit Oakbrook Mall on this beautiful day today, and we stopped at the shoe store there to see what size Daniel's feet are now and he's a size 4 1/2. I knew his feet got bigger! So of course we picked out a fun new summer pair of shoes for Daniel's outdoor adventures and we came right home and tried them out. Do you like them? I just adore them! (They're so darn cute, I may yet convince myself to get him another pair, too! At that price, though, we'll see!)

18 @ 18!!

Daniel studies his growth record book...he must know how excited we are...

18 lbs at 18 months!!
(And that's all I have to say!)
(except that here's a silly picture)

One and a Half

Happy One & a Half Birthday, Daniel! How is it possible that he's 18 months old today?! And that soon he'll be closer to being TWO than one? Oh...and can we skip to his 3rd birthday? We have a feeling he'll be a strong-willed two year old. He's already starting to demonstrate his strong will...lucky us. No, really, he's a wonderful toddler- we couldn't be more lucky. And we're enjoying the ride of parenthood tremendously!

This biggest update this month is how much Daniel talks now. (gee, I wonder where he gets that from...and I'm sure we've only just seen the beginning!) I just love to listen to him talk and he talks ALL the time. Lots of babbles (it's cute when they're high-pitched) with words mixed in. Babbles while he plays and walks around the house, and then oh my goodness lots of words when he talks to us or looks at books. I think language development is just fascinating. We're pretty much hearing a new word or two every couple days now. New words: ba (ball- this is his FAVORITE word- he sees balls everywhere & practically shouts with excitement "BAAA!"), bee (beep, beans)- it's cute to hear him in the back seat going "bee, bee" when he hears a car honk, beh (bread), bah (banana), lll (lion and other words with lll in them), vvv (car), ga (garage), kkk (apple crunching sound), ah (out- another favorite word since we go outside a lot more now), ow (ouch), and j or s (juice). He does his "meows" for cats with a really high pitch now which is just so cute. And we think it's too cute when he says, "mama, dada, mama, dada" over and over. He sure knows who we are.

BUT his most awesome new words are....drumroll please...hint- I can tell you four people who think this is just the best... Grandma (rara or sometimes gra) and Grandpa (pa)!!! Daniel can even name mama, dada, rara, and pa in pictures, too.

Other new developments: Daniel can kick his leg out, he almost leaps, he can jump if he holds on to me or pushes off a footstool, and he can kind of somersault which for him is mostly going to the side but he's sure trying. Daniel and I go to Parent Tot Gymnastics on Tuesdays now and it's a lot of fun. I'm sure he'll catch on to a lot of skills there. Daniel also loves to throw balls. He still has a TON of energy.

Daniel also knows how to drive! And no, I'm not referring to that now famous picture of Daniel "driving" our car- he can drive his very own car. If you don't remember, Daniel got a car for his birthday that he loved to push around. It's in our basement now since there's so much more room for it down there and he still pushes it from time to time, but last week he got on it and started driving/scooting- backwards! He hasn't gone forward just yet, but he sure scoots it backwards. He's so proud of himself, too!

Activities Daniel loves: recycling or helping with garbage (it's a great excuse to go out in the garage which Daniel loves now), being chased, playing peek-a-boo (he hides behind his hands, behind his chair, or behind toys), hiding his hands, spinning (he actually get dizzy now from spinning so much), and he loves to be outside. Have I mentioned...he LOVES to be outside! Daniel doesn't care if it's cold- he just wants to be outside. So, we're outside a lot these days- good thing it's Spring now!

Reading is a lot of fun these days, too. Before naptime and bedtime, Daniel will snuggle up in your lap with his lion and request more and more books. He identifies many of the pictures in his picture book- the ball is the most emphatically identified picture. Daniel can also name and will request a few of his books- Go Dog Go is go go, Kiss Kiss is identified with two kissing sounds, he says meow for Meow Goes the Cat, and makes his oops face for Blue Hat Green Hat (there's a silly turkey that put clothes on wrong and the book goes oops each time).

We've also discovered that Daniel loves to take showers. He had his first shower just before our trip to Florida, because we knew the condo only had showers (no bathtubs) and we wanted to make sure Daniel would tolerate showers. He loves it. It's really a lot of fun to watch. He doesn't mind the water everywhere and he likes to play and splash in there. He'll stay in there well past the shivering and pruney stage; he does not like it when the shower is over. He will turn right around and try to get back in. We still do baths mostly, but every now and again a shower is a lot of fun. I think showers are another sign of toddlerhood...

I posted before that Daniel can point to many parts of his face. There are still a few we're working on. We have a mirror on the back seat headrest so that we can see Daniel in his car seat while we're driving, and it's fun to play the game of "where?" while we're out & about. Daniel smiles so big when I cheer him on- so cute!

As for size, Daniel is still pretty small, but I do think he's taller again. His 9 month pj's are starting to stretch- that's usually my first clue that's he taller. He's all over the place in clothes size- depending on the brand, of course, just to really throw us off. He's got a 3 month waist, 6 month leg (sometimes 9), and 9 month torso (sometimes 12). Rompers/one pieces work out the best because I can get a 12 month and not have to worry about the pants falling off! Whew- don't you wonder how I keep up?! I also think his feet are a little bigger. It's time to shop for new shoes! This I will enjoy. :)

Enjoy some more Mickey pictures below- these outtakes from his monthly Mickey picture taken after lunch today.

Time for a snuggle with the lion!

Daniel gives Mickey a kiss!

Our wiggly guy managed to sit in Mickey's lap at one point.

Lots of tickles were part of the silliness, too!

We celebrated Daniel's 1 1/2 birthday this evening with Banana Cream Pudding Pies (made with coconut milk, of course)- complete with a cookie and a half for the "candles". Daniel gobbled it right up!

Daniel's 18 month well-visit is this week, too. I'll be sure to update you then, too!
